Animal RescueBig Heart REscue

At Petnerships we know that there are hundreds of dogs, cats, and small animals available for adoption and that rescue organizations work tirelessly to save and help those animals--and we are committed to helping people and animals find each other. We envision a world where there are no more 'puppy mills' or 'backyard breeders', all animals find their forever home...and all people find their new and special (albeit furry) BFF's.

If you are looking to add to your family, please be sure to take a look at the beautiful animals below and see if one might be your new (BFF) Best Friend Forever!

This Month's Profile on an Amazing Rescue Organization--

HugABull Advocacy and Rescue Society

HugABull operates primarily in Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island, and serves the entire province of BC. HugABull is a registered non-profit organization and a community of pit bull owners, advocates and enthusiasts, whose mission is to rescue dogs, provide public education, and build a community of responsible pit bull owners and supporters.

HugABull rescues and advocates for pit bulls, quite simply, because “we are in love with this breed. Our dogs are athletic, fun-loving, intelligent and eager to please. They are obedience class stars, Rally-O competitors, agility stars, therapy dogs, activity partners and couch potatoes. They are our best friends.”

Media sensationalism, irresponsible ownership, and irresponsible breeding have damaged this breed’s reputation, but for any “unstable” pit bull you may see in the headlines, there are hundreds of pit bulls that live as gentle family pets.

“We rescue pit bulls because we love them, and because they need it more than any other breed.”

A pit bull's natural temperament should always be extremely loving towards people. Human aggression is not considered part of this breed, and can be attributed to unscrupulous over breeding. A typical pit bull should always welcome a human with a wagging tail and a warm heart, and generally they make lousy guard dogs because of this innate love for people.

Two pit bull owners looking to help the many pit bulls languishing in shelters across the Lower Mainland founded HugABull in 2003. They started building relationships with local shelters and identifying the great dogs that were being overlooked because of breed stigma. One dog at a time they built a network of foster homes and adopters, providing support and information to ensure a successful match. They labeled themselves “HugABull” in 2004 and launched their website, which catapulted them into the public eye. HugABull was registered as a non-profit society in 2006 and since then has grown and developed a presence on Vancouver Island as well as in the Okanagan area.

Today, HugABull has re-homed over 300 dogs and has a community of over 600 members.

“We continue to grow and expand each year and have big dreams. Among them? We’d like to be the “go to” organization for pit bull related issues in BC, and one day have our own shelter. Our ultimate goal is to see a day where no pit bull is euthanized or passed by for adoption because of its breed.”

Here are just a few of the wonderful dogs adopted from HugABull:

SIMBA is an all around kind of girl. She brings energy and enthusiasm to her walks but also loves to hang, happy to curl up, relax and snore with her family. Her eyes and face hold the wisdom of age but don’t let that knowing look and white muzzle fool you - she’s only around five years old. Simba is a ready-made dog for any moderately active home, whether you live in the city or country. Her only need is for a confident owner who will help her with dog-to-dog intros, which make her a little nervous at first. With slow and relaxed greetings, however, Simba loves her doggie friends.

Soft, sweet and cuddly, BOBBY is a very happy 1 1/2 year old boy who loves life. His playful nature is matched only by his eagerness to please: he has learned basic obedience and manners in just a couple of short weeks in foster care. Like all pit bulls, Bobby loves people best but he does wonderfully with all species - dogs, cats, birds. He walks well on a leash, has lovely house manners, and loves treats and toys. An all-round superstar!

Two-year-old CYRUS is a loving, people-oriented boy. He loves to snuggle and his foster home describes him as a “heart stealer”. He is full of energy and eager to please. With proper introductions Cyrus does well with other dogs and has no problem living with one - although he does like to chase cats and small animals, so feline housemates are not advised. He's very athletic and adores a run or long hike, but is very happy to play with his toys and chew a bone when inside, followed by a nice long snuggle on your lap.
